Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
2014.02.25 19:08:21

Whether our hair is virgin or chemically treated (color or relaxer treatments) hydration is the key to keeping our locks looking great through these cold rough winter days. The appearance of dry, dull hair is absent of moisture. Just as the body needs water to be hydrated, the hair needs water too. Water is the only ingredient for moisture and hydration. For hydration, a hot towel treatment or a stream treatment can bring that dull brittle hair back to life and allow for longer lasting styles.

Boiling-WaterOnce the hair has been properly hydrated the water molecules need to be locked into the cuticle with a leave in serum or light oil before drying. The oil locks in the moisture and the hair is the protected from heat and daily styling. You know how it feels after you get a facial steam, Fresh and Vibrant. Well that is how your hair looks after a steam treatment, bouncy, shiny and full of life. Don’t forget to add the steam treatment on your to do list on your next appointment!

Extensions. Express Your Already Beautiful Self
2012.09.18 14:19:39
Although NOW is the best time for women and teenagers to express themselves with their hair in the way they want to, so many teenagers are opting for long, to the waist extensions.  Women and teens have lots of options, from natural styles, braids, twists, relaxed, extensions in a variety of techniques and textures so on and so forth.  I think teenagers are trying to emmulate the women on reality TV and are thinking this is the way they should look.  I would like to see more variety in the hairstyling among African-American women on tv instead of everyone looking the same.  Whether they know it or not they are role models to our teens.

I don't have a problem with extensions at all, I just don't want these young ladies feeling like they must have extra long hair to feel valued because that is far from the truth. I also don't want to see more and more damaged hair due to excessive weaving and extensions without proper care. Young ladies need to know that they are of value with or without extensions. Whats important is substance, character, and healthy hair completes the package.

I definitely understand the need to want to look nice and that is commendable but don't get it twisted as India Arie sings, "I am not my hair, I am the soul that lives within."

Hey teens, if you want to emmulate someone try to emmulate Gabby Douglas US Gold Medal Gymnast or First lady Michelle Obama. And if you choose to wear it, wear it well, don't let it wear you!! And please don't forget to take care of your own hair underneath.

Beautifully Textured
2012.04.27 19:47:25

2012 is the beginning of the best time for women of color and their hair.   We have the opportunity to wear our hair in a variety of  different styles that wereViolanaturalHair400xauto-31259 not options for us in previous years. Now, our styles can compliment our personality and lifestyle. Before now, professional African American women in the work place sporting natural tresses such as locks, braids, curly wet sets or just natural curls were not acceptable.  The only acceptable look was straight. Natural hair  is spreading quickly. Women have realized that they don't have to look like the stepford wife to get the job done and companies don't have to feel intimidated or threatened by Curly-Natural-Black-Hairstyleswomen with natural hair.Unlike the 70's most women wore wigs and afros now women are wearing whatever makes them happy and confident.  They can wear curls, afros, pin ups, curly sets, extentions, wigs with alter ego names, etc....

Natural hair, relaxers, and extentions are here to stay! They all have their place.  Women just have to consider the options available to them, their lifestyle,  the maintenance, what they have to start with.  Deciding on a complimentary hairstyle can be challenging. When in doubt recruit the help of a skilled professional.  Through a little experimentation and the right products you will arrive at the style perfect for you.  You are all beautiful!
